Sama Chawal Vrat ki Tikki is a round snack especially made during fasting in India. Made from barnyard millet (also known as sama ke chawal, moraiya, moriyo, vari, varai, sanwa, samwa and swang) and mashed potatoes this round and flat shaped snack is either shallow fried or can be roasted in little oil as per preference. It should be eaten with chutney or curd/dahi. It is made during fasting festivals like Janmashtami, Shivratri, Navratri, etc. Do try it today.
INGREDIENTS:
1/4 cup barnyard millet (washed in plain water)
1 cup water
Salt to taste
2 boiled & mashed potatoes
1-2 finely chopped green chillies
5-6 finely chopped curry leaves
½ tsp grated ginger
2 tbsp finely chopped coriander leaves
¼ cup coarsely grounded peanuts (unsalted)
¼ tsp cumin
¼ tsp coarsely ground black pepper
Oil for frying & greasing

PREPARATION TIME: 10 min
COOKING TIME: 15 min
TOTAL TIME: 25 min
* 1 CUP = 237 ML
METHOD:
- Pressure cook washed barnyard millet with water & salt to taste for 3-4 whistle (4-5 min).
- Allow cooker to cool down on its own. The millet gets thick after cooled down.
- Take it in a bowl.
- Add boiled & mashed potatoes, finely chopped green chillies, finely chopped curry leaves, grated ginger, finely chopped coriander leaves, coarsely grounded peanuts (unsalted), cumin, coarsely ground black pepper & salt to taste.
- Mix well.
- Make 6-7 round tikkis using greased hands & place it on greased plate.
- Heat oil for shallow frying & put tikki in oil & fry on high flame.
- Turn it over when it one side becomes golden. Do not turn over much or else it can break.
- Fry on other side till golden.
- Take it out on paper napkin.
- Fry remaining tikki in same way.
- Serve with imli chutney or curd.
